开元通宝为唐代货币。钱币在唐代始有“通宝”,唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年，为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。
        Kaiyuan Tongbao was the currency of Tang Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, coins began to have "Tongbao". In the early Tang Dynasty, Sui Wubaht was used, which was light and confusing.        开元通宝钱在我国钱币史上具有划时代的地位。“开元”，意指开辟新纪元；“通宝”，意指通行宝货。开元钱的划时代地位表现在：唐代以前的钱币，多以形制或重量为名称，如刀币、五铢钱等，而自开元钱后，改称“宝”、“通宝”、“元宝”等。开元通宝是唐朝统治290年中的主要流通货币，而且影响了中国1000多年钱币的形制、钱文模式和十进位衡法。

       最初的“开元通宝”由书法家「欧阳询」题写，形制仍沿用秦方孔圆钱，规定每十文重一两，每一文的重量称为一钱，而一千文则重六斤四两。
